Maskew Miller Longman launches short story competition
Maskew Miller Longman is pleased to announce the launch of the third annual Maskew Miller Longman Literature Awards, which focuses on the genre of short stories. Once again, the competition will give equal weighting to all official South African languages.
This year we are calling on writers of all the 11 official languages, to send us their original and unpublished short stories. Entrants are required to submit manuscripts aimed at South African youth between the ages of 15 and 18 years.
The total prize money for the short story competition exceeds R120 000 in cash with the winning entry in each language category receiving R7 500 and runners-up R3 500 each. All winning entries will be published as part of a multi-author anthology. Literary experts will screen all entries while final judging will be performed by prominent literary figures.
Authors will be supported in country-wide workshops hosted by Maskew Miller Longman and faciliated by an expert in short story writing. More information about our author workshops will be communicated early in next year.
Maskew Miller Longman is committed to publishing literature in all South African languages and to this end we are proud of the newly published titles of the winners and the runners-up of the inaugural Literature Awards competition. This competition, which called for youth novels, came to a celebratory end at an awards ceremony in Johannesburg where we honoured both experienced and brand-new authors.
Cheryl Carolus, Patron of the Awards, said that she was honoured to be involved in this important new initiative which is making such a substantial contribution to the development of literacy among South Africa’s teenagers and young adults.
Rules and entry forms for the short story competition are available from the Maskew Miller Longman Head Office in Cape Town @ (021) 532 6000 or e-mail email@example.com. An official entry form must accompany each entry. The closing date for the competition is 31 May 2008.
